The Dude Abides…

…Crazy 4 Cult is back!

cult2010evite_600px

This year’s Crazy 4 Cult show is expected to be the best ever. Kevin Smith and Scott Mosier (of Clerks fame) host the show at Gallery 1988, and the evening promises to be full of great art, and references to some of everyone’s favorite cult classic movies. My take this year is from one of my favorites: The Big Lebowski. Maude gets her due as the dream sequence Valkyrie under delicious double-coated resin. The painting is pretty large, one of my largest on paper to date, and I’m quite pleased with how it turned out. We’ll be in attendance for the opening, this Friday, July 9th from 7-10PM. Hope to see you all there!

New art and an upcoming new show…

…save the proverbial date!

First up, I’ll have a painting in C.A.V.E. Gallery’s upcoming two-year anniversary show: “Repeat Offenders” show.  The show opens June 4th at 7PM and goes until 11PM. It’s also a benefits show, for “Haiti Healing Arts” with 20% of all proceeds to fund ICAF’s Art Therapy program for child victims of the earthquake that ravaged Haiti.

Acrylic on paper, mounted to wood panel, resined. 7.5″ x 17″

The piece was a fun one to do, working it in around my upcoming solo show in September at Subtext Gallery. It’s a continuation of the recent themes I’ve been playing with, all pieces acrylic on paper, mounted to wood and of course, smothered in resin. I’m more comfortable painting now than I’ve been in quite awhile, which is not to say that I certainly don’t have room for improvement. I’m always striving to get better, and getting into a painting zone has become more…challenging lately with the birth of Jackson. Anyway, mark your calendars, the show opens Friday, September 10th at Subtext Gallery in downtown San Diego. Look for my ad in the July issue of Hi-Fructose magazine. Enjoy!

Another toy long forgotten…

…from your abandoned toy collection.

Just finished up a new vinyl custom for upcoming Buddy Custom Show. The blank was an 8″ Bic Buddy, and the show opens at Crewest Gallery, March 27, 6PM—9PM. The toy was fun. Been meaning to spend more time with sculpture, experimenting, having fun, trying to figure out new ways to dump my mind out in three dimensions. This was a labor of…something not quite like love. The magic-sculpt is, as usual, nice and durable, but getting all the details I wanted took some effort. Finally dropped some money on a fancy craft Dremel tool and some tiny files that made the difference. Still getting used to the medium, but I prefer the magic-sculpt to sculpey as I got sick of the stuff shaling off during sanding and/or modifications. More to come in the future, perhaps just a little larger. Still just getting into this 3D medium, but I think I’ll definitely be coming back for more. I’ll try to take progress shots in the future!

The toy is a vinyl Bic Buddy, modded with magic-sculpt. The final piece was gessoed, painted with acrylic and then finished with both matte and gloss finishes. Enjoy!
