…from your abandoned toy collection.
Just finished up a new vinyl custom for upcoming Buddy Custom Show. The blank was an 8″ Bic Buddy, and the show opens at Crewest Gallery, March 27, 6PM—9PM. The toy was fun. Been meaning to spend more time with sculpture, experimenting, having fun, trying to figure out new ways to dump my mind out in three dimensions. This was a labor of…something not quite like love. The magic-sculpt is, as usual, nice and durable, but getting all the details I wanted took some effort. Finally dropped some money on a fancy craft Dremel tool and some tiny files that made the difference. Still getting used to the medium, but I prefer the magic-sculpt to sculpey as I got sick of the stuff shaling off during sanding and/or modifications. More to come in the future, perhaps just a little larger. Still just getting into this 3D medium, but I think I’ll definitely be coming back for more. I’ll try to take progress shots in the future!
The toy is a vinyl Bic Buddy, modded with magic-sculpt. The final piece was gessoed, painted with acrylic and then finished with both matte and gloss finishes. Enjoy!

…a new painting for your viewing pleasure.
October is a busy month, with no less than three group shows featuring my artwork. Since I’m terrible about planning anything blog related, I’ll do each show a bit at a time, starting with the closest one. The Hive Gallery in Los Angeles is putting on a huge art show featuring the Tarot Deck. Selected artists were asked to create an image based on a card chosen at random. My card was Justice, which I will mull over for meaning based on recent life events. It’s a return to my works on paper days, to which I have been anxious to return. The painting is acrylic on heavy paper, which was then mounted to wood. The whole thing was varnished and then resined for a nice glossy wet look. I’m very pleased with the result and will be doing more paintings with this technique in the future. I’m most comfortable on paper, and this was really fun to do and took less than half the time, while being twice as good. Go figure. Here it is, “Justice” for your viewing pleasure:

“Justice”
Acrylic on paper, mounted to wood, resined. 11″ x 14″
The show opens Saturday, October 3rd, at 8PM. Eight dollars at the door gains you entry to what promises to be a fantastic show. Full details below. I was lucky enough to score the cover image, so you know, that’s groovy. Contact Nathan Cartwright at The Hive Gallery for purchasing information.

More soon, I promise.

…Crazy 4 Cult?
Tonight is the night. Crazy 4 Cult at G1988, starting at 7PM. The line is apparently expected to circumnavigate the globe twice, so get there early. Got an update, apparently Kevin Smith will not be able to attend, which is blowey, but the show should be fantastic anyhow! TONS of great art, and many other Edward Scissorhands interpretations as well. Be sure to check out the artwork of Dan May, Ana Bagayan, Jason Limón, Kelly Vivanco, and a special collaboration between Craola and Amy Sol among many others, as it is always an amazing inspiration and at the same time, frustration to see these amazing artists making it happen. All the pertinent details are on the sweet-ass flyer below. See you there!
