Zelda Endures: a Tribute to Video Games.

by ncwinters on September 14, 2011

*UPDATE* Prints are now available online here.

I’m pretty excited about this newest painting.

The painting is for an upcoming show: Tribute to Video Games at Gallery 1988 at the Venice location. The show also marks the 25th anniversary of The Legend of Zelda orignally released on the Nintendo game system in 1986 (for those bad at math). For those not born in the 80s, or who just live under a rock and have never heard of video games, Zelda was one of the first Nintendo games I ever played and definitely the first one that made me really fall in love with the video game medium. I’m pretty sure beating the game was one of the first (and not last) times I was ever emotional at the end of a video game, and this was back when the games were only 8-bit. The next few Zelda games were also amazing, but I have to admit, I haven’t been able to play the last few incarnations of the series.

I’m very proud of how this painting turned out, especially as it became a juggernaut to complete on time with all the detail. In addition, I made a custom frame by hand, which was a learning experience to say the least. Let’s just say I finally got around to using a router for part of the frame, but the ENTIRE rest of the frame was carved, smoothed and sanded by hand. I may not be doing it again this way to be sure, but it was certainly a learning experience working with wood in a new way. Add the custom goldleafing and again, I would approach the frame an entirely different way in the future. Suffice to say, I’m extremely pleased with how the final product turned out.

For those following my Tumblr account (and if you aren’t, why not?), you’ve been able to see much of this painting as it’s progressed. I’ve been posting progress shots which have been very well received. I’ve included a mini animation that documents the various states of completion so you can see the whole process in one shot.

Since the response to the piece has been so positive even before completion, I’m happy to announce that a limited edition of prints will also be available. The archival giclée prints are 19″ x 13″ on 100% cotton rag, printed with pigment inks. The edition size will be limited to 75, available at the gallery the night of the show and available for purchase online through G1988 the next day after the show opens. The prints will retail for $75 and are expected to go soon, as so many people have requested them in advance!

Don’t miss the show this Friday, it promises to be amazing. Full details below. See you at the show!

San Diego Comic Con 2011 Signing and Booth info.

by ncwinters on July 18, 2011

Hey gang, it’s that time of year again.

That time when downtown San Diego loses its collective mind with masses of people coming down for the comix and the movees and the artz for the San Diego Comic International Convention 2011. Well, this year I’m a little more ahead of the game than usual, and will be signing in a few booths with some merch for sale to boot! One of these years I’ll actually be there with a booth, but baby steps. For now, swing by, say hello and maybe even pick up some art at these places:

Dragatomi: I’ll be at the Dragatomi booth #4935, Thursday, July 21 from 2PM to about 3PM. I’ll have several prints, some of the 100 Drawings series and a few other goodies, just for the Con.

ZeroFriends: I’ll be at the ZeroFriends booth #5502, Saturday from 10:30AM–11:30AM for at least an hour or so. I’ll be signing along with awesome artists Luke Chueh and Scribe. I’ll be on hand to sign your Crazy 4 Cult: Cult Movie Art book, which I’ve been featured in no less than three times! The book is full of amazing paintings by some fantastic artists, all with their take on various pop culture references, done up in their respective style. I won’t have any merch for sale, but it should be a fun time. Ask nicely, and I may even do a little sketch for you in your book if you so desire.

Cardboard Spaceship: I’ll be hanging out with the awesome guys of Cardboard Spaceship at booth #5032 Thursday, from about 10AM to 11AM. I’ll have prints and originals for sale, and be happy to sign whatever you’d like. No limbs, please. Come by and say hello!

See you there!

New Art, Inspiration from American McGee

by ncwinters on June 1, 2011

I’ve recently finished a new painting based on the upcoming American McGee’s Alice: Madness Returns video game. The painting will be part of a tribute to the newest title from American McGee’s Alice series and coincides with E3 at Gallery 1988 at the Melrose location.

The show opens June 8th and 9th, and features:

“Alice inspired original artwork as well as sketches, artwork and notes from the game’s actual designers. Also available: drinks served by girls in Alice costumes and celebrity DJs. It’s a party you can not miss. American McGee will be in attendance, so come celebrate and check out some amazing art.”

For purchasing info, please contact the gallery. Full details about the show are below. I’ll be attending Wednesday, at the E3 private reception. Hope to see you there!
