FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

New paintings by N.C. Winters
September 10th – October 10th, 2010
Opening Reception with the Artist:
Friday, September 10th, 2010 6–10PM

About the Show: Damages is Winters’ first solo exhibition with Subtext, in which he has created a collection of paintings that interpret the feelings of disrepair, sacrifice and loss wrapped in N.C.’s definitive style. The vibrant colors, raw textures, and enchanting characters found in his work introduces his unique point of view that often incorporates the juxtaposition of disparate themes in a very graphic, yet highly illustrative approach. On view at 2479 Kettner Blvd from September 10th-October 10th, 2010, this will be Winters’ first solo show in San Diego.

About N.C. Winters: A child of the 80s, fueled by cartoons, MTV, and illustration, N.C. Winters is a painter and illustrator. He’s spent most of his life under a blazing sun, first in Phoenix and now in southern California, and it shows in the brilliant colors and rich tones of his work. Focusing mostly on the  figure—both its delicate beauty and abrasive toughness—he works in a variety of media, including watercolor, acrylic, and plain old pen and ink on paper. Some people say his work reminds them of tattoos; others say he fits in with skateboard and surf culture. But N.C. is just trying to let the pictures in his head out into the world and figure out what he wants to do when he grows up. He currently lives and works in Carlsbad, CA.
More of Winters’ work can be found at www.ncwinters.com.

About Subtext Gallery: Subtext is a gallery & bookstore located on the outskirts of downtown San Diego that showcases urban contemporary, pop surrealist, and lowbrow artists from all around the globe. Born in September 2006, Subtext took aim on San Diego’s under-served design market. After repeated trips to cities like Los Angeles, San Francisco and New York, partners Don Hollis and Dylan Jones wanted to bring some more eclectic sources of creative inspiration a little closer to home. With an inventory truly connected to all things design, Subtext aptly fills the void. As a one stop shop for design, art, architecture, photography and illustration, Subtext provides an environment dedicated to high design intended to nourish creative spirits for years to come.

…at the Hall of Justice.

Tomorrow the show opens! Meanwhile…at the Hall of Justice at Subtext Gallery has its opening reception from 6-10PM, less than two miles from the Convention Center. Take a break from a long day of buying comics, watching movie previews and wincing at awful cosplay at the San Diego Comic Con and head over to the art reception. Live music, refreshing beverages, and many of the artists (including myself) as well as this limited three-day show all for your pleasure. Check out the details below. See you there!

More art than you can handle…

by ncwinters on July 9, 2009

…or at least more than you should handle, without gloves.

Three group shows in July coming very soon, for your viewing pleasure:

First off, the Kokeshi: From Folk Art to Art Toy show presented by the LATDA and JANM opens July 11, and goes to October 4. Each artist is given a traditional wooden Kokeshi and told to go crazy with it. A  huge lineup of amazing talent is in this show, and I am honored to be a part of it.

“Omniscience”
Acrylic on wood, resined.

Then the always fantastic Crazy 4 Cult: 3-D show at Gallery 1988 is Thursday, July 16th, 7-10PM. The show features 100 artists paying tribute to cult classic films. I’ll be in attendance, drooling all over everyone else’s amazing art, and I will have two pieces in the show: my movies are Fight Club and Edward Scissorhands, respectively.

“I am Jack’s Broken Heart”
Acrylic on wood, resined.

“Severed Edward”
Acrylic on wood, resined.

Lastly but certainly not least-ly is the “Meanwhile…at the Halls of Justice” show at Subtext in San Diego, Friday, July 24th. Corresponding with the San Diego Comic Con (the gallery is only a few minutes away from the convention center), this show has several artists re-imagine superheroes on an off day. Amazing talent again, be sure to check it out, especially if you will be at the Con.

“Darkest Night”
Acrylic on wood, resined.

I’ll be at the G1988 show and the Subtext show. Hope to see you there! Please contact respective galleries for purchasing information.
