…from your abandoned toy collection.
Just finished up a new vinyl custom for upcoming Buddy Custom Show. The blank was an 8″ Bic Buddy, and the show opens at Crewest Gallery, March 27, 6PM—9PM. The toy was fun. Been meaning to spend more time with sculpture, experimenting, having fun, trying to figure out new ways to dump my mind out in three dimensions. This was a labor of…something not quite like love. The magic-sculpt is, as usual, nice and durable, but getting all the details I wanted took some effort. Finally dropped some money on a fancy craft Dremel tool and some tiny files that made the difference. Still getting used to the medium, but I prefer the magic-sculpt to sculpey as I got sick of the stuff shaling off during sanding and/or modifications. More to come in the future, perhaps just a little larger. Still just getting into this 3D medium, but I think I’ll definitely be coming back for more. I’ll try to take progress shots in the future!
The toy is a vinyl Bic Buddy, modded with magic-sculpt. The final piece was gessoed, painted with acrylic and then finished with both matte and gloss finishes. Enjoy!

…the one with the waggily tail?
Wow. Just realizing how out of it I’ve been as far as the blog world goes. I’ve been slammed, I’m been slack, I’ve been full of many excuses. A lot has happened from the last post, so let’s jump right into it.
Let’s see, Ginger (my lovely wife) hijacked my last post to tell you all about the Keep-A-Breast show, which went well. I should back up a step and comment on the fantastic job she did on the post. My blog entries will pretty much always pale in comparison to hers. She has started her own blog and is much more professional and punctual with her blogification. Check it out when you can- rambleramble.com. Nicely laid out and her excellent writing makes for a good read. I’m a bit biased though. Did I mention she’s my wife?
Let’s see…what else?
Oh yes, the Deep Water group show at C.A.V.E. Gallery in Venice happened a few weeks ago. Never got around to posting about it, see the aforementioned to slackassery. You can see a nice video of the show, as well as a full gallery of the paintings. I’m quite proud of a brand new watercolor I did for the show. Haven’t done a watercolor in quite a while and enjoyed working on this one. Resined it onto a plank of wood when I was done. Still experimenting with the resining, but I’m really enjoying it. Expect more resined drawings and watercolors in the future.
Symbiosis- Watercolor and ink on paper, resined onto wood.
What else, what else?
Oh, the Beasts of Burden show was at Subtext last Friday. The featured toy was the MIAO cat and mouse combo from Zakkamono. A great show as usual, Don and Dylan are always great, and of course props to George and Gabriel who are always on top of it. “It” of course, being awesomeness. Can’t mention the show without calling out the married pair Zakka and Rae. This super fun and creative duo comprise Zakkamono- the company responsible for the design and production of the MIAO kitty cat and mouse. Both super neat people, both with fantastic MIAO customs in the show. Check out some of the shots:
Never Too Old- Acrylic on vinyl MIAO cat and mouse. Acrylic glaze coating.
Never Too Old- detail.
That’s about it for now. I’m using this long post as an excuse to get my lazy butt back into bloggerizing gear. A little easier now that we have a new Mac, but that’s another story…

…and swing by LA the next night for even more!
Big upcoming show weekend! Friday, July 25th at Subtext Gallery in downtown San Diego, don’t miss “Beasts of Burden”- a custom vinyl show with many great artists. KMNDZ, N8 Van Dyke, Doktor A, Frank Kozik, Scribe and many other amazing talents will be in this group show that I am proud to be a part of. There’s a sneak preview Thursday, July 24, but the opening reception is Friday, July 25th, from 6-10PM. Yes, this all goes down during the San Diego Comic Con, which is literally a few blocks away. If you are around for the convention, you can’t miss the vinyl show! “Beasts of Burden” is co-curated by Cardboard Spaceship, and I will be at their ComicCon booth 4737 earlier on Friday to promote the show and my work. Swing by their booth at 3PM and I’ll be there for sketching, signing, or just chatting away. The following evening, Saturday July 26th, I will be the featured artist for Cannibal Flower. Show is one night only, from 9PM to 1AM, with a paltry $8 admission. The event will be at Infusion Gallery, in downtown LA. I will be showcasing a large variety of work, so if you haven’t checked out the work in awhile, you should definitely swing by. Here’s a snippet for your viewing pleasure, hope to see you there!
