Lepidoptera 12 & 13.

by ncwinters on May 11, 2022

Grab your nets!

My intrepid team of biologists have announced two new entries in the Lepidoptera catalogue. Presenting Lepidoptera 12: “Skul” and Lepidoptera 13: “Poppy.”

Extensive research has revealed two unique color patterns for each moth. Skul specimens with the “Oxide” designation display a carapace in blue and black with coppery notes throughout, echoed in its teal and hazel stare. Meanwhile the “Viscera” flavor of Skul is haunted by deep rich reds, blues and purples, contrasting its pale lavender eyes. Both seem to have a rigid metallic edge, to seemingly protect their fragile wings?

It’s hard to miss a Poppy with the “Pomegranate” color pattern. It is a bold specimen, with rich reds, pinks and purples surrounding its fiery gaze. On the other hand, the “Peridot” variety is a delicate and subtle mix of soft greens and blues, edged by a subtle orange. This color harmony is echoed in its pale amber eyes, edged in green.

Individual catalogue pages of these new specimens can be acquired for your own study and viewing pleasure, in a forthcoming limited edition release. Some of our more enthusiastic researchers have provided a select few hand-painted catalogue pages. No two alike, these were documented on location in the field, using inks, paints, and iridescent media to uniquely enhance the design. These have become more elaborate and time consuming over the years, so we have had to adjust the purchase price accordingly.

The full collection will be available through our online emporium this coming Friday, May 13 but be warned! The folios are limited in quantity, and the hand painted pages in particular are extremely coveted, and seem to vanish from the library first. Those who are subscribed to our periodic journal: ‘The Art Bucket’ can find exact details regarding the optimum time to attempt an acquisition (sign up for the newsletter in the sidebar to get the exact drop time).

As always, we thank you for your patronage! On to the specimens!

I’m proud to announce my latest art release in collaboration with the care and craftsmanship of friends at NeonEye Gallery.

“Spring Eternal” is a ‘new’ fine art print release coming this Thursday, April 21 through NeonEye. I say ‘new’ because the original form of the image was as a gig poster for Dave Matthews Band in 2019. As happy as I was with the result at the time, I knew this image was special and that I wanted to push it even further. There was just simply much more I wanted to explore beyond the original form as humble gig poster. While I have released art print versions of gig posters before, this one is unique and markedly different in several ways.

Every gig poster experience (or really, any creative project) has come with the feeling of being hamstrung by time. That there’s never been enough to do everything I want with any creation. For any maker, the adage “It’s not what you make, it’s what you ship” must be paramount, and adhered to diligently. You must live by this mantra and attempt to learn when to stop, let go and be done. Otherwise you ultimately never actually release anything into the world. It’s just the way it works, you’ve got to stop in order to ship.

I know of course there comes a point where I must pull the trigger and stop working, be done and ship. It’s the same for everything I make, a neverending struggle to stop refining and allow something to be “good enough” to send off, whether it’s to a printer for production, a gallery for display, or into the hands of a buyer. I know this feeling is a common one for many artists and makers, but I often tend to view it disparagingly through the lens of someone who has never properly learned when and how to stop, let go, or think anything is good enough.

(I have a hunch this feeling may be universal, and not just reserved for makers.)

Right after the original gig poster was printed and shipped, I got to work on the second incarnation. I knew I wanted to refine the image and push my creative limits. Over the next several months, I punched up the atmospheric depth, added extra colors, refined anatomy, honed in the linework, and tried to finesse the tonal range. I basically tried to improve the design in every way I could. After almost three years to date of refining and enhancing, I’m excited to reveal the rebirth of the work and see its new reception in the world. During the honing process, I also created two brand new additional images that will accent the main for a set of three total prints.

“Spring Eternal” is the return. The inevitable rebirth of Spring that reliably follows the cold dormancy of Winter. The new beginning and hope that comes no matter how cold, dark, and stormy the winter has been. In a season that has felt like a long winter (in so many different ways) it is a good habit to remember that in fact “this too, shall pass.” As trite and pithy as the aphorism is, there’s a reason it continues to have such staying power, and why it seems more important than ever to hold front of mind.

“No matter how dark it has been, the light will inevitably come.”

“A Single Moment,” despite the title, is in fact two individual prints. These accompanying images serve to bookend the Spring season. A singular instant of time, split into a dual experience. First: the opportunity to take a single moment, to be present in the experience and exist entirely within that instance and nowhere else. No past, no future, only present. Second: to recollect and reflect on the memory of the moment after it has passed. To reflect on the experience of a moment after the fact, to be cognizant of the fact that life continues to move inevitably forward, and that we can remember and learn from our past.

A single instant of time, seen in two parts:
The experience of being present in the moment itself.
The calm reflection on the moment after.

NeonEye is producing this entire project. They’re a fine art gallery (and good friends) who have taken a great amount of extra time and care to make these prints come to life in the best form possible. As part of its evolutionary upgrade, the main image of “Spring Eternal” has been given more air to breathe and a higher quality substrate than its predecessor. Before: a modest 6-color 18″ x 24″ gig poster on standard paper stock, the new iteration features 8 total inks and measures 20″ x 27.” This and the two accompanying 10″ x 12″ companion prints are all meticulously screenprinted on heavy, natural fine cotton rag, every piece with hand torn edges. Each print is hand signed, numbered, and embossed with the NeonEye logo, and comes with a signed and numbered certificate of authenticity.

To say this print is a collaborative endeavor is an understatement. There’s been more care and hands-on attention with these prints than in anything I’ve ever made. The final package is a set of three limited edition matching numbered prints. All sets come in matching colorways in three different color modes:

“Serene.” Spring can come as a renewal or rebirth. A shrugging off of the chill of dormancy and end to the isolation of winter hibernation. The new season brings a renewed sense of vigor and vitality, marked by vibrant blooms of nature, and the return of flowering organic life. “Serene” blossoms with calm organic greens and warm earthy tones, a celebration of the new natural season.

“Vivid.” While Spring can bring a new season of peace, it can also herald an exciting period of wild and intense change. An extreme awakening that challenges old ideas, punctuated by fierce growth and dynamic new ways of being and seeing the world. “Vivid” bursts in vibrant cyans, pinks, blues and purples. An exciting leap into the future and unknown.

“Nostalgia.” And then there are the memories of past Spring seasons of old. The periods of rebirth and change of yesteryear that now exist only in the rearview mirror, relegated to the scrapbook of memory. Care should be taken not to dwell too much on the past, but the memories of past Spring seasons can be remembered fondly or with melancholy. “Nostalgia” reflects on the past in desaturated sepias, and the faded tones of a distant memory.

The prints will be available exclusively through the NeonEye website tomorrow, April 21 at 3PM CST.

As always, I am forever grateful and humbly thank you for your incredible support of my art.

Lepidoptera 10 & 11.

by ncwinters on March 16, 2022

Time seems like a new and increasingly abstract thing. But at least there’s new Lepidoptera to catch.

Been an age since my last update. I feel like that’s what I always say now, but in this case it actually was November I last released some new art, and that may be a new record. It feels ever increasingly strange to release art into the world right now. A world dealing with the ravages of Covid, a new war in Ukraine and all the other chaos of life, but it is what I do. And it is what I must do, both to keep my sanity and also provide for my family. So here we are.

I’m extremely happy with how the two newest entries into the Lepidoptera catalogue have come out. As always, thanks to Dave Correia for his impeccable skill printing these. His eye for maintaining the colors I’m pushing for is always appreciated. Thank you Dave.

This round features a couple variants from each main colorway. Maybe it’s the ADHD, maybe it’s just indecisiveness, but the last step of tweaking final color for output always brings new discoveries. Unseen possibilities for what ‘might have been’ color-wise from my original intention creating these bugs. It’s increasingly hard to resist seeing some of them come to fruition in printed form. So there’s some extra to choose from this time around.

The prints match the dimensions and medium of all previous Lepidoptera: 10″ wide by 8″ tall, on natural 100% cotton rag watercolor paper. Each print is hand signed and numbered according to edition size. Also, same as before, I’ve hand embellished a select few prints, for those who like their Lepidoptera with an extra personal touch. Irregular edges, drawing, colored inks, acrylic paint and textural effects, metallics, iridescent inks and whatever else is at hand in the studio as I free-form make a handful of prints into one-of-a-kind individual new paintings. These are random and all unique: you won’t know how one will look until it arrives.

Please note! There are strict limits in place in terms of how many prints can be purchased, and will be enforced, violators will have all orders cancelled and refunded:

NO MORE THAN TWO SETS (Lep 10 ‘Flame’ and Lep 11 ‘Morning’)
PER PERSON/PURCHASE/HOUSEHOLD.
Self explanatory- one or two sets per household, but no more.

NO MORE THAN ONE OF EACH VARIANT COLORWAY PER PERSON/HOUSEHOLD, INCLUDING HAND EMBELLISHED VERSIONS.
You can order a Lep 10 ‘Ivory’ and a Hand embellished Lep 10 ‘Shadow,’
but NOT TWO Lep 10 ‘Ivory,”
or a Lep 10 ‘Shadow’ AND a hand embellished Lep 10 ‘Shadow” etc.

The prints go up for sale this coming Friday, March 18 in the online shop at a random time. As always, to get the exact drop time, be sure you’re signed up to the newsletter in the sidebar over there. Newsletter subscribers get the inside scoop. These have traditionally gone very quickly, and I expect the same may happen for the very limited variants, so your best bet is the newsletter with drop time.

I hope everyone continues to stay as safe, healthy and sane as possible. The world is indeed different and ever challenging. Take care of each other and your individual mental health. I appreciate every single comment, like, and purchase you make with regards to my art. I cannot do this job without you, and I am grateful.

On to the prints. Be well, and I love you all!

For your information, there is a group on Facebook dedicated to my artwork. The group is filled with really good people who talk about, show off frame ups and help each other out in acquiring long lost works of mine. I didn’t create the group, several “fans” did. While I’m technically an admin, I don’t moderate the group at all, other than popping in from time to time with live video updates and special releases for the members of the group. Check it out if you’re interested!
