PURGE Studio Sale 2021!

by ncwinters on February 10, 2021

It’s that time again.

Time for the annual PURGE studio sale, where I ransack the studio looking for rarities, sold out prints, one-offs, originals, and all kinds of other goodies that have accumulated over the years. There’s just absolutely too much stuff to show here, but I’ll shoot to give a sampling below. I will list each item below as I find them so you can see live updates of what will be available, right up to the last minute. But you’ll have to check into the storefront the day of the PURGE to see a full list of absolutely everything available.

Please note that most of what will be available will be artist’s proofs (APs) which are the remainders outside a normal run. Identical in every way to the numbered edition of the run, simply the ends of the run normally used to replace any damaged or misprinted prints. There will also be a fair amount of numbered prints, but to keep everything streamlined, the only option in the store will be for “AP” prints, with some people receiving prints with numbers, and some with the “AP” designation.

Additionally, for many (most) of these items, there will only be a handful available at most, so be ready to add to cart and checkout and then head back into the storefront rather than filling up your cart for one big checkout. I refund shipping on items that can be shipped together (usually prints, and a max of about 3 or 4) so that’s not a problem (just maybe send me an email with a nudge and order numbers). Be advised that if you end up purchasing an original or two as well as prints, those often cannot be shipped together, and will require separate shipping. Basically like items with like.

It all goes up in one massive studio sale in the online shop, which this year will happen Saturday, February 13. As always, to get the exact drop time, you’ll need to be signed up to the newsletter, you can sign up in the sidebar over there.

Sale boiler plate info, PLEASE, PLEASE READ!

This sale is gonna be a big one. There’s more stuff than there’s ever been, and more people going for it than ever before. The amount of emails and messages I’ve received regarding this sale is incredible. (Sorry for those I haven’t responded to!)

That being said, there are definitely not enough rarities and special goods to go around for everyone. For the most part, there will still be strict limits in place of individual items. So, you could get one of each kind of variant of something, but not two of one kind.

I HIGHLY suggest familiarizing yourself with the checkout process and when purchasing, completing purchases of individual items right away rather than filling a cart only to possibly have half the items drop out to someone who checked out faster. (See my note above about refunded and combined shipping.)
Inventory does not update until after checkout, so you’ll have to complete your order in full before guarantee of purchase. Putting an item into your cart does NOT guarantee availability.

On to the goods!

“Bad Omen” Wave Two.

by ncwinters on January 27, 2021

As promised, the gang’s all back for the second wave.

Happy to finally be announcing Wave Two (of two) of my recent Bad Omen release. I split the run into two drops to better handle orders of multiple variants. The cotton rag paper is pretty beefy, and even two variants in one tube was pushing it. These are the last variants (a total of four- two colorways, in both regular and hand embellished) for this print, printed all at the same time by the stellar crew at EndHymns.

There was a bit of consternation when I was deciding on the above colorway (“Vintage”), as it almost became the main colorway. When tweaking the final colors for output (a notoriously long and stressful process), I came across this combo and just fell in love. It’s one of my frequent go-to’s: tweaking the colors ever so slightly towards a yellowed, muted scheme. The slightly faded, nostalgic sort of vibe really lights me up. I was torn which version to go with for the main colorway, but had to go with my original (“Classic”). The whole image was set up in that color scheme, and had absolutely the best mix of all the tones I was originally shooting for. But this one may still secretly be my fave (don’t tell Classic).

In addition to the penultimate “Vintage” scheme, I couldn’t resist a desaturated monotone colorway. I’ll admit, a big part of why I always like a print completely devoid of color is that I get to show off the painstaking linework these prints take. Ultimately, I feel most skilled with detailed linework, with color being my less strong suit. The “Mono” variant lets me emphasize my strengths. In it you can see the image reduced down to the main four shades of transparent brown that make up the full tonal value range of the print. There’s something about this one I particularly love, as to me it ends up feeling a bit like an old weathered etching. It makes the subtle washes in the hand embellished versions of these some of my favorites of the four (don’t tell Vintage).

Prints go live for purchase this coming Friday, January 29. As always, to get the exact drop time, you’ll need to be subscribed to my newsletter. In this ever-changing landscape of social media platforms, I find the good old archaic newsletter the best and simplest way to keep everyone up to date with the details of my various art goings-on.

I hope everyone is staying healthy and sane in these (continued) unprecedented times. There very much seems to be some light at the end of this tunnel, but also still some looming darkness just out of sight. Take care of yourselves and each other. I love you all.

New Art Print: “Bad Omen” Wave 1.

by ncwinters on November 22, 2020

Very, very excited to finally officially announce this new print.

I say that a lot don’t I? Am I excited about everything I make? Is it hype? I hope it’s not the latter, but this time I am definitely really, really excited about this one.

Handily the most intricate and complex work I’ve made to date, I’m blown away with how this print turned out, as it’s a perfect encapsulation of my preferred medium: stream of consciousness. This print also has several bells and whistles I’m very amped about. Special thanks to the fantastic crew at End Hymns for the stellar job producing these in screenprinted form. In addition to the airtight registration and perfect colors (7, including a spot gloss varnish), they also hand deckled the edges of each print, produced on a fine cotton rag paper.

The goal for this print was to really push the boundaries of what I am capable of creatively and through the screenprint medium. Transparent colors are built up in transparent tones, much like watercolor, to try and get a wide range of color and tonal value with as few plates as possible. The final product was then pushed a little further with a spot gloss varnish on the shiny and “wet” areas of the piece- metals, eyes, etc. Additionally, the stock is a high end cotton rag, with hand-deckled edges (done by the professionals at End Hymns, not me!) which also take hand embellishing beautifully. I’m really excited and delighted at the quality of this premium new print.

The prints will release in two waves. There are a total of four colorways, only the first two will be available in Wave 1. The second two variants will come out in Wave 2, which will be announced in the new year.

“Classic” and “Midnight” are the first two colorways, shown in order, along with some details views to follow. In addition to the regular prints, a select handful will be hand embellished for those wanting something extra. The hand embellished prints will go above and beyond, featuring custom painting, ink washes, iridescent inks, gold leaf and whatever else comes to mind in the time I’ve been working (and will continue to work) on these. For real: the cotton rag paper has made these a delight to work on, and I may have gone a little overboard.

Prints will drop next Tuesday, November 24 at a random time in my online shop. As always, be sure you’re signed up to the newsletter in the sidebar of the site for full details and drop time.
I hope everyone is staying as healthy and safe as possible in this surreal time. I thank you as always for the incredible support!
Be well, and on to the prints!
