DC Comics: Batman Group Show at Mondo Gallery!

by ncwinters on October 24, 2014

Very exciting!

I’m thrilled to announce my participation in tonight’s DC Comics x Mondo Gallery group show: Mondo Celebrates 75 Years of Batman. The show includes a top notch roster of talent, and I’m honored to be included. In Mondo’s words:

In celebration of the 75th Anniversary of Batman, we are proud to present a gallery show featuring artwork inspired by the DC Comics hero. The exhibit will include posters and original artwork from over 30 artists inspired by various incarnations of Batman from comics, Batman 1966, Tim Burton’s Batman, Batman: The Animated Series and The Dark Knight trilogy.

My piece: “Man of Bats” is my take on the caped crusader in a more literal fashion, and is a kind of blend between Batman and Manbat. It was a fun one to make, float-mounted with a custom, hand sculpted frame (note the logo in the bottom, center) with collaged pages from actual Batman comics in the float-frame background. I won’t be able to attend the show, but if you’re in the Austin area, you should definitely check it out! Full show details at the bottom.
Enjoy the show!

“The 13th Hour” Group Gallery Show

by ncwinters on October 12, 2014

Honored to be included in the annual “The 13th Hour” group show with such a talented roster!

The annual “The 13th Hour” show was last night at Last Rites Gallery, (oops, meant to get this out earlier!) and looked like a mega success. My piece was a direct tribute to the passing of H.R. Giger and am honored it got to hang in Last Rites, as I understand the owner, Paul Booth was a close personal friend of Giger and deeply crushed by his loss. It was a tough piece to make, as the impact of Giger’s passing was heavier than I thought. I’ve always been a fan of his work, and I guess I didn’t realize quite how much until he passed. I tried to pay homage to his works and yet still try to keep my own feel about the piece, and I think it succeeded. I am extremely pleased with the custom sculpted frame for this exact reason. Cheers to everyone who made it out to the show, hopefully you can make it out again next month where I will have my show, “Overgrowth.” Enjoy!

A Full Week of New Art! Day 5 of 5!

by ncwinters on October 3, 2014

The final day!

Thanks to everyone who purchased from the store this week. I was able to clean out a bunch of in progress projects and procure some much needed funding for our vacation, which starts today! Three offerings for you today, the first of which is an experiment I want to tackle for a future print run. The painting “SuperNature Redux” is actually a rework of an old scrap print of the same name. I reworked the print with pen, inks and acrylics to make it uniquely different than the original pencil and ink monochrome drawing. I think it turned out pretty well, and I’m planning on a future print run where every print goes beyond simple hand embellishing, but rather becomes it’s own unique original. Hope the idea is well received, look for it early next year.

“When Summer Ends” is an attempt to keep a painting simple and not overwork it. I wanted to keep some looseness in the painting, and not exactly sure where to go next, I decided to leave it and see the response.

And finally, “A Good Offense” is another in my warrior women series, with emphasis on my personal take on the traditional typical portrayals of women in art and comics. I am interested in different approaches on silhouette, hairstyles and overall different approaches on the traditional hackneyed portrayal as women in skimpy armor. Hope it resonates! Enjoy, and thanks again to all for making a Full Week of New Art a success!
