“Fading Away” – Collaboration with Pangeaseed for New Art Print

by ncwinters on August 4, 2020

SO happy to finally be able to announce this, easily one of my most complex prints to date, and for an amazing cause.

“Fading Away” is a new seven color screenprint to highlight the current plight of the planet’s coral, in a collaboration with Pangeaseed.

The goal behind “Fading Away” was to try and create a visual that brings attention to the urgent plight of the world’s coral. It was challenging to both illustrate the beauty of what we’re rapidly losing due to climate change and pollution, but also underscore the danger of the current situation. Thus, two versions of the print were made. The full “lush” version highlights the overwhelming color and beauty of a natural coral reef, while the “bleached” version emphasizes how much of the coral is looking today, bleached, devoid of color and near dead. The element of the skull is also more emphasized in this version. It was an intentional reason to include a human skull, to draw the connection to the ocean and ourselves, to highlight the very literal way we can “see” ourselves connected to the ocean. What we will lose from the ocean will be directly felt by us as a human species.

On a technical note, this was one of the most challenging screenprint images I’ve created to date, with the full color builds and tonal range requiring airtight registration and color accuracy. It was meticulously printed by the crew at VGKids, and boy did they have a challenge in front of them. The print required airtight registration as well as a challenging series of transparent colors to make this image come together in cohesive unity. Many thanks to the printing crew at VGKids for the exceptional job.

Special thanks as well to Tre’ Packard of Pangeaseed for having me on the project, and for his patience in how long the print took to come to fruition. This was an ambitious project and took much longer than expected, but I’m extremely proud of the results.

The prints measure 18″ x 24″ in both full color “Lush” and the desaturated “Bleached” version. Each version also comes in two versions: regular and deluxe. The regular version features seven colors, while the deluxe versions feature an additional two plates: a glow in the dark layer as well as a transparent spot gloss glitter flake for added emphasis.

To order the limited edition prints, with 50% of proceeds going directly to Pangeaseed and their work to save the world’s oceans, check out the online store link here.
