I’m very excited to announce I’ve been asked to be the guest juror for the upcoming fifth annual Surreal Salon juried art exhibition at Baton Rouge Gallery in Louisiana.

In their own words:
*****
Surreal Salon 5 to feature Pop-Surrealism/Lowbrow art from across the United States!
Presented by Baton Rouge Gallery center for contemporary art (BRGCCA),
Surreal Salon 5 is aimed at once again engaging audiences in a multi-sensory
art experience like no other in the region by shedding light on the growing
popularity and exceptional quality of the pop-surrealist/lowbrow movement.
This exhibition will be held from January 2-31, 2013 at BRGCCA.
The exhibition will feature works from across America in a multi-discipline show.
The work selected by the exhibition’s juror as “Best in Show” will be displayed
in a full-page ad in the April, 2013 issue of Juxtapoz Magazine! The artist’s work
will appear (w/ title, medium and dimensions listed) along with their name & website
and will be recognized as “Best in Show” for Surreal Salon 5.

…and I will be jurying the work. Frankly, I’m a bit concerned about their judgment.
It isn’t that the show lacks in any merit, quite the contrary in fact! Last year’s show was guest curated by amazing artist Casey Weldon. That’s some pretty big shoes to fill, both artistically and literally (he’s very tall). It’s both a huge honor and a bit intimidating to be asked to put my artistic evaluation on anything, let alone an entire collection of submitted art by talented artists from all over the country. The executive director, Jason Andreasen has been kind to do his best to put those fears to bed, and succeeded in convincing me to take on the task. I’ve agreed and the artists who will submit their works will be subject to critical eye.
I’ll be at the gallery on Saturday, January 26, 2013, for the Fifth Annual Surreal Salon Soiree:
“A costumed soiree in honor of Surreal Salon 5, from 7 – 11 p.m.
This will be an exciting evening of visual art, live musical performances,
surrealist games and costumed attendees channeling their own pop-surreal visions.
The event will be held at BRGCCA inside Baton Rouge’s historic City Park (1515 Dalrymple Dr.).”

I’ll also be in town the following day, giving a short presentation about my art, and my thoughts on the state of Pop Surrealist art and other random ramblings.
So now it’s up to you, artists of the world. If you’re interested in submitting, be sure to check out all the info and details here. Everything you’ll need to know is there, including all pertinent dates and submission guidelines. I’m very excited to see the work and the get going on the difficult task of winnowing down each piece to determine best of show. See you there!
