I’m proud to announce my latest art release in collaboration with the care and craftsmanship of friends at NeonEye Gallery.
“Spring Eternal” is a ‘new’ fine art print release coming this Thursday, April 21 through NeonEye. I say ‘new’ because the original form of the image was as a gig poster for Dave Matthews Band in 2019. As happy as I was with the result at the time, I knew this image was special and that I wanted to push it even further. There was just simply much more I wanted to explore beyond the original form as humble gig poster. While I have released art print versions of gig posters before, this one is unique and markedly different in several ways.
Every gig poster experience (or really, any creative project) has come with the feeling of being hamstrung by time. That there’s never been enough to do everything I want with any creation. For any maker, the adage “It’s not what you make, it’s what you ship” must be paramount, and adhered to diligently. You must live by this mantra and attempt to learn when to stop, let go and be done. Otherwise you ultimately never actually release anything into the world. It’s just the way it works, you’ve got to stop in order to ship.
I know of course there comes a point where I must pull the trigger and stop working, be done and ship. It’s the same for everything I make, a neverending struggle to stop refining and allow something to be “good enough” to send off, whether it’s to a printer for production, a gallery for display, or into the hands of a buyer. I know this feeling is a common one for many artists and makers, but I often tend to view it disparagingly through the lens of someone who has never properly learned when and how to stop, let go, or think anything is good enough.
(I have a hunch this feeling may be universal, and not just reserved for makers.)
Right after the original gig poster was printed and shipped, I got to work on the second incarnation. I knew I wanted to refine the image and push my creative limits. Over the next several months, I punched up the atmospheric depth, added extra colors, refined anatomy, honed in the linework, and tried to finesse the tonal range. I basically tried to improve the design in every way I could. After almost three years to date of refining and enhancing, I’m excited to reveal the rebirth of the work and see its new reception in the world. During the honing process, I also created two brand new additional images that will accent the main for a set of three total prints.
“Spring Eternal” is the return. The inevitable rebirth of Spring that reliably follows the cold dormancy of Winter. The new beginning and hope that comes no matter how cold, dark, and stormy the winter has been. In a season that has felt like a long winter (in so many different ways) it is a good habit to remember that in fact “this too, shall pass.” As trite and pithy as the aphorism is, there’s a reason it continues to have such staying power, and why it seems more important than ever to hold front of mind.

“A Single Moment,” despite the title, is in fact two individual prints. These accompanying images serve to bookend the Spring season. A singular instant of time, split into a dual experience. First: the opportunity to take a single moment, to be present in the experience and exist entirely within that instance and nowhere else. No past, no future, only present. Second: to recollect and reflect on the memory of the moment after it has passed. To reflect on the experience of a moment after the fact, to be cognizant of the fact that life continues to move inevitably forward, and that we can remember and learn from our past.
A single instant of time, seen in two parts:
The experience of being present in the moment itself.
The calm reflection on the moment after.
NeonEye is producing this entire project. They’re a fine art gallery (and good friends) who have taken a great amount of extra time and care to make these prints come to life in the best form possible. As part of its evolutionary upgrade, the main image of “Spring Eternal” has been given more air to breathe and a higher quality substrate than its predecessor. Before: a modest 6-color 18″ x 24″ gig poster on standard paper stock, the new iteration features 8 total inks and measures 20″ x 27.” This and the two accompanying 10″ x 12″ companion prints are all meticulously screenprinted on heavy, natural fine cotton rag, every piece with hand torn edges. Each print is hand signed, numbered, and embossed with the NeonEye logo, and comes with a signed and numbered certificate of authenticity.
To say this print is a collaborative endeavor is an understatement. There’s been more care and hands-on attention with these prints than in anything I’ve ever made. The final package is a set of three limited edition matching numbered prints. All sets come in matching colorways in three different color modes:
“Serene.” Spring can come as a renewal or rebirth. A shrugging off of the chill of dormancy and end to the isolation of winter hibernation. The new season brings a renewed sense of vigor and vitality, marked by vibrant blooms of nature, and the return of flowering organic life. “Serene” blossoms with calm organic greens and warm earthy tones, a celebration of the new natural season.
“Vivid.” While Spring can bring a new season of peace, it can also herald an exciting period of wild and intense change. An extreme awakening that challenges old ideas, punctuated by fierce growth and dynamic new ways of being and seeing the world. “Vivid” bursts in vibrant cyans, pinks, blues and purples. An exciting leap into the future and unknown.
“Nostalgia.” And then there are the memories of past Spring seasons of old. The periods of rebirth and change of yesteryear that now exist only in the rearview mirror, relegated to the scrapbook of memory. Care should be taken not to dwell too much on the past, but the memories of past Spring seasons can be remembered fondly or with melancholy. “Nostalgia” reflects on the past in desaturated sepias, and the faded tones of a distant memory.
