New Art Print Release: “Last Stop.”

Oooh, this one. I’m really excited about this one.

First of all, a very special thank you to everyone who has purchased recently. “Madness Revealed” was an incredible sell-out, and “Spring Eternal” also did well, with a few hand-embellished prints still left available. I’m always humbled by your support of my art, thank you.

Of all the myriad constraints in making gig posters, easily the most impactful is time. There’s a good chance I simply make my gig posters too elaborate, that I just spend far too much time on them. I’ll chalk it up to an obsessive nature and a deficient ability to stop in a timely manner. It often feels like I could spend forever refining each and every poster. But alas, the time inevitably comes when the image must get sent away, to meet the printing deadline. My recent Trey Anastasio gig poster was very much an instance of such.

I had a blast working on the original image, pushing details all the way up to the printing deadline. Even after I sent the art out I didn’t stop, knowing I needed to keep working on it to get it to its next form. I spent about as much time AFTER the original poster deadline re-working the entire image for its next incarnation. I spent an obsessive amount of time overhauling the sky, land, main tiger creature and the riders. I redid the mountains, updated the flora and pretty much fell into a wormhole working on the cliff face. I also edited the fur and musculature of the tiger beast (he was missing his feline tummy-pouch). I tweaked the colors from the first run, edited shadows and tones, and even redid the white ink pattern for the foil background for a little extra. I wasn’t happy with how close the original poster art went to the edge of the page, so I also bumped the whole image down a few percentage points for some grace in the edge relationship.

I fell into a love/hate relationship reworking this cliffside.

Removing the text required shifting the planet to a whole new astral system.

No detail was left untouched- even the white ink plate for the foil prints was redone.

That sounds like a problem for future N.C. so I’ll save it for him. Special thanks to DL Screenprinting for producing these prints with such excellent quality. It couldn’t have been done without their care and attention to detail.

This image is the spiritual successor to “Pale Rider,” the image I made for a gig poster for Primus with Clutch. There is much more planned for this universe, one of exotic adventures featuring riders of great fantastical beasts. Stay tuned to see how this universe develops, most likely over a long time.

Hey look, it’s 2023.

Where did the time go? No, seriously, can anyone tell me? Another year, another rotation around the sun. Another January, full of promise and opportunity. To kick it off, here’s something I’ve been working on for awhile finally and ready to release out into the world.

“Madness Revealed” is the first print of many slated to release for the Year of the Rabbit. This declaration is both exciting and nerve-wracking, as it forces me to wrap up many of the projects that have been puttering about in limbo: half started, half finished, however you want to look at it. I’ve got my very first employee on staff, and a strong sense of forward-momentum that I hope lasts, as I’m shooting to make this year a big one.

Where was I? Oh yeah:

“Madness Revealed” is the reworked art print version of an image I created for a Primus gig, back in 2018. That feels like a good 13 years ago by my Covid-math. Since then I’ve tweaked elements of the image, adjusted the tonal range, finessed the colors a bit more, and other parts of the boring alchemy that goes into the creation of an image for screenprint. Needless to say, I’m happy with the results.

Printed once again by the crack team at DL Screenprinting, I’m continually grateful for their commitment to printing excellence. I didn’t give a lot of room in regards to plate registration for this print, and they still managed to nail it, without the whole image turning into a blurry mess. Kudos to Steve and the rest of his team for top notch execution. The prints come in three colorways: “Main,” “Vintage” and “Midnight” in various edition sizes/prices. Full details below.

In addition to the new art print, there will also be a new sticker pack available. Lepidoptera 6–10 Pack o’ Stickers is a collection of five stickers: one of each of Lepidoptera 6–10, in a similar format to the previous Lepidoptera Sticker pack (1–5). Thanks to the automatons at Sticker Robot for the phenomenal printing, their high quality screenprinted vinyl stickers have to be seen and held in person to be truly appreciated. Always a joy and an easy going production process working with them. Full details below.

New Art Print: “Just A Peek.”

Happy to announce my newest print: “Just a Peek.” It’s the art print version of my recent Dave Matthews Band poster, which has received more positive response than any of my other gig posters to date! I’m humbled by the support of the image.

This piece was designed as an art print from the very beginning. I wanted to do an almost purely natural scene, with emphasis on lighting and depth. I really fell into and had a blast with this piece. The prints are seven colors on both Cougar 100# natural paper stock as well as holographic rainbow foil in three different colorways: “Dusk,” “Nocturne” and “Midnight.” The silver border element features a metallic silver ink which really pops off the paper. For the holographic rainbow foil version, this silver is dropped out with the metallic foil shining through. The final effect of the border, horns and eyes shimmering in holographic reflective foil turned out extremely well and has to be seen in person to be fully appreciated. I normally try to avoid using foils for my art prints, but the result for “Just a Peek” turned out incredibly well and I’m excited to have this as an option for this print, in very limited quantities.

Special thanks to Lady Lazarus for their attention and care on the printing. Screenprinting is always a collaboration, and this print (especially the midnight version) could have ended up very differently if they weren’t on their game both in terms of excellent color mixing and tight registration. Thank you to Isaac, Aleisha and the rest of their team as always (now just hurry up on Spring Eternal!).

Additionally, a huge thank you to everyone for their continued support of my work. I’ve been in the weeds in terms of scheduling for a long time now, but after a recent vacation, I’m working to try and get the business side in gear a little better. My goal is to have more efficient turnaround times on shipping, hopefully through the hiring of staff, as well as through other time management solutions. Additionally, my goal is to have a better emphasis on work/life balance to try and get my mental state on a better track. The business has reached a point where I need to make some serious decisions about my time and energy and I’m excited about the possibilities it might open up. Only time will tell.
